This comment right here is a perfect example of alt right racism. They try and make points that show they aren't racist, or they try and change the definition of racism, or they do the classic whataboutism to change the subject that they aren't racist. But you know what? They want a White America, and that's pure racism.
And bro, I'm a small town Midwestern white dude. I see racism everywhere here. But that doesn't mean that kind of thinking is right.

Questions Answers
Around here nobody talks about the argument that increased regulation of the internet would help stop child predators. Is that true, and if so where do you fall on the Net Neutrality vs law enforcement spectrum? No I don't think that's true at all. Child predators have been around much longer than the internet, and I would argue child abuse was more prevalent 50+ years ago when children were seen and not heard and it wasn't talked about. The dark web hasn't created more predators, it has just given them a new place to gather and hang out.
The one thing I found really interesting when I was lurking the forums of the child predators was their frustration about how children are now taught from a very young age that certain touching and acts are wrong and that they shouldn't keep certain secrets. It came up over and over again that they could not abuse certain children because they knew those children had someone they would tell. It was pretty clear that education was a child's best defence against getting abused.
the below is a reply to the above
That's so interesting, thanks for the AMA! Can you remember any other thing that a child could do in order to protect himself from being abused? What other characteristics do the abusers hate in potential victims? That seems to be the main one. Kids who speak up and who have close relationships with one or more people they are likely to confide in
What do folks talk about in the child predator forums? Do they like give each other advice on how to improve their craft? Yes, quite literally. The give each other tips on how not to get caught, how to edit out incriminating details in videos, how to drug children, techniques for convincing kids not to tell etc
the below is a reply to the above
Given your insight into how predators operate, do you have any advice for parents on protecting their kids? I'll cut'n'paste a response i gave to someone else about this, because it was something that really stuck out to me:

Has the exponential increase in Bitcoin value affected darknet dealers in any profound way? I can imagine that some drug dealers were sitting on quite a large sum of Bitcoin when the value shot up. Crypto purists hate to admit it, but bitcoin would not be where it is today without Silk Road. It was sitting at less than a dollar when Silk Road began and the markets showed a robust use case for cryptocurrency and as the markets grew, so did the demand for bitcoin. It also provided real-life use data for those who were not interested in drugs but who weren't sure if it had practical application. When SR went down, Bitcoin was at about $650 and it continued to grow as adoption became more mainstream. There are many many stories of drug dealers (and at least one faux-hitman!) who gained most of their wealth not by selling the drugs, but by the growth in value of their bitcoin holdings
Since you have a lot of experience with them online. Do you think pedophiles(not child abusers) should be treated as criminals, or as people suffering from a mental illness? Contact offenders should be treated as criminals, because they are criminals. They have abused or hurt someone. Same with those who support the creation and dissemination of child abuse materials.
Pedophiles who do not act on their urges should be given as much help as humanly possible.
Are there any mysterious or suspicious pages or communities that you haven’t been able to access? Anything that seems especially weird? there are a lot of Russian communities that I can't access, mostly because I don't speak Russian. Some of the more technical hacking communities have entry barriers that I'm not technical enough to score an invite to
How much these bad people really exist out there? Hundreds? Thousands? More? It depends what you mean by bad. If you mean people who use the dark web to buy drugs (who I do not consider bad) then there are many many thousands. There are also thousands of people who deal in stolen information to make money.
Unfortunately there are also thousands of child predators and the dark web has provided a "safe space" for them to come together to share materials and "tips". I hope this is where most of the resources of law enforcement are concentrated
Ehy mine is a rare question: what do you know about art on dark web? I'm talking about the black market made of stolen important pieces from museums, art used as value to money laundry and other criminal affairs I'm an artist and what I know is people don't think too much about the dark side of art and probably they need to open their eyes about I really haven't come across much in the way of that. Some of the markets have an "art" section, but that is mostly blotter art
How accurate are the legends? Any legends in particular? For a lowdown copied from a post I made in another forum:
1Red Rooms The one that is most persistent is the myth of the "Red Room" - live streaming of torture/rape that ends in the murder of the victim and which people can pay to watch, or even bid to type in commands for the torturer to carry out (highest bid wins!). The most famous was the “ISIS Red Room” pictured above, where people could provide instructions to torture captured terrorists - you can read what happened here.
People have this idea of Hostel with webcams exist all over the dark web, but you just need an invite to get into them. It's ridiculous. They don't exist. They certainly wouldn't exist on Tor. But people are desperate to believe and they always come back with "You can't prove they don't exist, people are crazy, therefore they must exist." Picture my eyes rolling here.
2.Hitman sites
I don't think many people are taken in by the hitmen sites anymore, though the press loves playing up the fact that there are sites offering up hitman services. But every single one of them has turned out to be a scam, especially Besa Mafia, the one that did the most marketing. Again, you can read about it at the same link as above.
3.Exotic animals People are always asking where they can find markets for exotic animals. Obviously the illegal trade in exotic animals exists, and some communications and transactions may well take place over Tor, but there are no markets like the drug markets where you can go and look at a picture and then put a tiger or ocelot or something into your basket and buy it with bitcoin.
SO WHAT DOES HAPPEN ON THE DARK WEB?
1.People buy and sell drugs.
The drug markets are more busy than ever. You have probably heard of Silk Road, the most famous online drug market that got busted a few years ago and the owner sent to prison for two consecutive life terms? A lot of people thought that was the end of drugs being sold on the dark web. In fact, dark web sales of drugs have tripled since the shutdown of Silk Road.
The reason people buy drugs this way is that for many they offer a safer alternative for people who are going to do drugs anyway. There is no possibility of any violence. The vast majority of the time a buyer knows exactly what they are getting, because of the feedback and rating system. That's not the case in a nightclub, or even friends-of-friends, where you just blindly accept that the pill, powder or tab is what the seller says it is.
2.People buy and sell other illegal things
Mostly they buy and sell stolen credit cards and financial information, fake IDs (though lots of these are scams), personal information, “dumps” of hacked data and fraud-related items. For a long time, a seller was making a fortune selling fake discount coupons that really worked.
3.People access and create childporn Unlike the other markets, the CP market is generally not for money, but rather they are groups who swap vile images and videos for free. The worst of the worst is called “hurtcore’. Thankfully, most of the people behind the worst sites have been arrested and put in jail.
4.People talk about stuff
There are plenty of sites, forums and chatrooms where people talk about all sorts of things - conspiracies, aliens, weird stuff. They take advantage of the anonymity.
5.People anonymously release information
Whistleblowers use the dark web to release information and make sure their identities won't be compromised. You will find Wikileaks, for example, on the dark web.
6.People surf the web anonymously
The number 1 thing people use the dark web for is just to surf the web completely anonymously. Not everybody wants to be tracked by advertisers.
I have a question: what are the odds of the casual Darkweb drug buyer - not buying mega loads all the time - the occasional purchase - what are the risks of being busted? Kinda figuring pretty low. But you’re the expert. What do you think? Obviously there is always a risk, but the risk is very low. It is rare for personal amounts to be seized. Even if a package is seized, there's usually no resources to follow it up. Many people report simply receiving a letter from Customs saying they have seized what they believe is contraband and the person has a choice of going to claim it or it will be destroyed. Even if LE does knock on the door there is plausible deniability: "I don't know who sent that stuff to me".
So yeah, rare, but it does happen. You might be the unlucky one
How do you find things on the dark web without search engines? There are a lot of entry sites, set up with links to the most popular places. You can generally get a link to one of them by browsing places like reddit. From there it is a matter of checking out different places, people will put links in forums etc.
I also use a Pastebin where people paste sites they have made/found, and a Fresh Onion site, which crawls all the newly-populated .onion addresses
Hi. there!! Thank you for answering questions. Mine is very simple. How do sellers get the drugs to people? Regular mail? That's always puzzled me bc I'd assume USPS, UPS, fedEx or any other mail carrier would catch at least some goods. If people are ordering drugs, particularly in powder form, for personal use, they can be flattened, sealed in MBB (moisture barrier baggies) and sent in a regular business envelope, indistinguishable from billions of other envelopes going through the postal system every day. The chances of a particular package being intercepted is very low.
Some people take the extra precaution of having the person taking delivery of the drugs different to the person/household that is ordering them.
How did you move from being a corporate lawyer to researching and writing about dark web? I was in London, working for one of the most conservative law firms in the world when the Global Financial Crisis hit. I liked the job but it struck me when people were losing their livelihoods that I was working for the bad guys. I'd always wanted to be a writer so when I came back to Australia I quit law and enrolled in a writing course planning to be a novelist, but I discovered I was better at journalism. I first wrote for newspapers here about Silk Road and it grew from there
I've always wanted to check out the dark web, what is a normal day for you look like on there? Can you give me any tips on how to safely surf the dark web? A normal day looks like me sitting at my desk writing things on my computer. When I'm researching a book or a case I venture away from my computer to trials and to interview people (at least I did pre-COVID)
There is nothing inherently unsafe in surfing the dark web. All the usual precautions you take surfing the clearweb apply. Don't visit any child exploitation sites - it will be pretty obvious that's what they are by the names/descriptions before you log in.
It is only when you want to do more than surfing - e.g. buying drugs etc - that you need to do a LOT of homework or you will absolutely get scammed
Is there anything good about the dark web? It depends what you are into. A lot of academic research has concluded that the darknet markets provide a safer way for people to buy and use drugs, due to the ratings of vendors, services that independently test and report back on batches of drugs, doctor on staff ready to answer questions, no violence in transactions etc.
News sites provide a dark web option so that whistleblowers can safety provide information and upload documents that get stripped of any identifying metadata before being available.
It bypasses firewalls and allows for secure communications under hostile regimes
the below is a reply to the above
How does this make you feel about the idea of the decriminalization of drugs? I've always been for full legalization of drugs, and studying the darknet markets just proved I was right.
I was invited to an experts roundtable in Portugal about drugs and cybercrime a few years ago and the Portugal model of decriminalisation has been a great success
the below is a reply to the above
Hey, you are still answering. Been reading this thread for 1-2 hours now. Thank you so much for all the good work and info! Always been intrigued by this topic, downloaded tor once to explore a bit but couldn’t and deleted it right away, to be on the safer side. Great insights. Thanks! I've been writing it for about 14 hours. Going a bit loopy
How was working on Casefile? What's the production process like? Which episodes did u do?? I have listened to... all of them.... I absolutely LOVE working for Casefile. I am a freelancer, so I source and write my own cases and then sell the scripts to Casefile. I've done at least a dozen, but some of my most popular are Amy Allwine, Mark & John, Ella Tundra, Leigh Leigh, Rebecca Schaeffer...
As for the production process, once I have sold the script to them, a staff member edits them and then they are passed on to Casey to narrate. After that, they go to Mike for sound editing, music etc. They are the best team ever
the below is a reply to the above
Oh, Leigh Leigh was so well written!! How do you choose which stories to write? Do you just pick true crime you're interested in? Thank you! I have a huge list of potential episodes. Any time I come across an interesting crime on reddit, or in the news or wherever I make a note of it. Then I just pick one when it comes time to write a new script.
Sometimes I've been personally involved (e.g. Amy Allwine), gone to trials etc. Those are always the best ones
Hi Eiley, your twitter just reminded me of this AMA :) What are your thoughts on bitcoin? And would you prefer to be paid in crypto or fiat? OOOOH, I know that name! Love & Light to you!
I like Bitcoin and I wish I had a whole lot of it and like many many people, I wish I had kept the first crypto I bought at something like $4 a coin :D I do not have a whole lot of it but I do have a little bit. I like the philosophy behind it and in theory it should change the world. However the reality is that the vast majority of it is concentrated in a very few hands which allows for market manipulation and stops it being useful as a post-fiat currency.
As long as I'm getting paid, I'm pretty happy!
the below is a reply to the question
I too remember your name Pluto! Such a decent human ❤ he is!! True OG right there <3
Is the dark web subject to more racism than its counterpart, the world wide web? There are some white power sites and that sort of thing and the chans are even more uncensored than the clearweb ones (4chan, 8chan) but to be honest they are the same cesspools in different spots. Drug forums don't seem to be very racist. I've seen worse on Twitter
Have you seen any consequential political or social organizing being carried out on the dark web? Not directly, but the dark web helped facilitate the Arab Spring uprising in 2010 by allowing activists to remain anonymous and to access blocked websites and social media. Wikileaks, obviously. Some white supremacy organizations seem to use it to coordinate attacks, but they are not places I'm keen to hang out in.
What’s the most expensive thing for sale you’ve seen on the dark web? What was surprisingly inexpensive? I can't remember specific listings, but there were sometimes sales of things like coke by the kilo, so that sort of thing I guess.
LSD could easily be found for $1/tab and one huge dealer gave it away for free if it was for personal use
the below has been split into separate questions
1. I’m going to ask a couple in hopes that one will catch your interest! I know you’re anonymous on the dark web, but even so, have you ever felt worried about your safety? I actually made the decision to be upfront and honest about who I am on the dark web, so I use the name OzFreelancer (which is easily traceable to my real name) on all the dark web sites where i went looking for interviews. The people there had the option of talking to me or not, so they had no reason to want to harm me.
2. I’ve found your comments about your relationship with Yura fascinating. Did y’all develop a friendship? Did you build any other relationships that stand out in your mind? Since you were straightforward about being on the dark web for stories, did people seem reluctant to communicate, or were they excited for the opportunity to divulge a secret? We do have a friendship of sorts, it is really quite weird. I do hope to met him one day. I met all of the senior staff of Silk Road other than the Dread Pirate Roberts himself and keep in touch with some. Some people wanted nothing to do with me of course, but many more were happy to talk to me. i think sometimes it was a relief to them to be able to talk to one person who they knew was who they said they were.
3. On violent forums, did users ever express remorse, guilt, shame, or anything indicative of some recognition that what they were viewing/seeking was awful? Do you see doxxing teams on the dark web working together to uncover info, or is the info already there through previous hacks/breaches, and someone just accesses and releases it? Sorry if any of those don’t make sense! I’m not familiar with the dark web lingo but am so intrigued by your work. Not really. I think if they were contributing to the forums, they were comfortable with who they were and what they were doing. Many of the "regular" pedophiles expressed revulsion about Lux and hurtcore sites though
these have probably been asked before but has there ever been a time where you where genuinely been scared for your life and whats the most messed up thing you've witnessed did you have any help? Yeah both things have been answered in this thread, so I'll cut'n'paste
The only time I've felt even slightly in danger despite all this nosing around in there was when I helped uncover a hitman scam. The owner of Besa Mafia, the most profitable murder-for-hire site in history, came after me when I started writing about him. He made loads of threats ("you don't know who I am, but I know who you are and where you live") but that wasnt scary, as I had access to the backdoor of his site thanks to a friendly hacker and knew he didn't really want to hurt anybody.
It took a bit of a darker turn when he told the people who had signed up to work as hitmen on his site - and who he made video themselves burning cars with signs on them to advertise how legit his site was, then never sent them the promised money for doing so - that I was the owner of the site who had ripped them off. That could have become ugly, but luckily even the thugs weren't dumb enough to believe him.
The only other time I've been a bit nervous was when Homeland Security wanted to have a "friendly" meeting with me on one of my trips to the US to attend a trial. They were friendly, but scary too.
The most frightening experience I've ever had is coming face to face with Lux, the owner of Pedoempire and Hurt2theCore, the most evil and reviled person on the entire dark web. He was responsible for procuring and hosting Daisy's Destruction, the most repulsive video ever made, created by Peter Scully, whose crimes were so bad, the Philippines are considering reinstating the death penalty especially for him.
It wasn't frightening because Lux was frightening - he was anything but. It was frightening because he looked so inoffensive and normal.
It was frightening because he was living proof that monsters walk among us and we never know.
[deleted] It is absolute crap for browsing the clearweb, and a lot of sites detect that it is odd traffic and you have to solve their CAPTCHAs before doing the most basic things
I’m sure you’ve seen some really bad stuff, do you regularly talk to a therapist to help? I've never seen a therapist (they don't really seem to be a thing in Australia they way they are in the US), but I have been known to unload on my partner and my dog
the below is a reply to the question
Yo, speaking as an Aussie, they absolutely are a thing, you can get them covered thru medicare, and I recommend it if you possibly can! Bro, therapy is awesome. I'm not against therapy as a thing, but I've honestly never been so traumatised that I feel I need it. Also I had a bad experience with a psychologist after I watched my partner die in an accident - they suggested I find God, and I noped out of there
the below is another reply to the answer
Therapist is an American term- we call them psychs. And the one who told you to find God was terrible and out of line. Yeah she didn't last long before I was over it. Also a doctor decided I needed Xanax, which was also a bad move, because what I really needed was to grieve and Xanax doesn't let you do that properly
Do you find any good things on the dark web? Happy stuff that gives people hope? Or just the trash? I like the psychonaut communities. They just want peace, love and mungbeans for everybody
Have you heard of "The Primarch System" rumor of the dark web? Sounds downright silly to me. But I'm curious if anyone who spends time on the deep web actually takes it seriously, or if as an idea it is connected to anything serious at all. Nah, up there with the Shadow Web and Mariana's Web. There's always people who want to find out where the "deeper" "more secret" "really dark" stuff is. To them I say what, hurtcore isn't dark enough for you?
Doesn't delving the murky depths of child predator forums categorize you with the child predators in the eyes of an investigating law enforcement agency? Do you have some sort of amnesty due to your journalism, or is that something you worry about having to explain away? Has your presence there ever caused some sort of a scare? No, I never went into any of the sites that had actual photos or videos (you can't un-see that shit), but did spend a lot of time in pedophile discussion forums. I also went to a hurtcore hearing and saw screenshots in the police files, as well as listening for two days to videos being described frame-by-frame and private communications between the site owner and the sadists.
Besides drugs and sex crimes, what else is going on in the dark web? Are there other interesting nooks and crannies? I often post screenshots of bizarre sites I find on my Twitter. However, the main uses for the dark web are drugs, digital/fraud goods and child exploitation
I have one, it might be rather boring though, but here goes. On these "child predator forums" are they actually forums devoted to stalking children and do they share social media profiles of children among themselves? That would be kik ids, snapchat and facebook ids, instagram, stuff like that, info that would allow online access and that may have been chosen for suitability? Creepy question I know, but anyway I would be interested to hear your answer. I came here from TrueCrime, you referred to these things in your post on that sub. I suspect I already know the answer yet would like to hear your take on it. Yes, they provide information and tips on how to approach children, how to ensure they won't tell, how to sedate them in some instances, where to find child exploitation material, how to remove metadata and any identifying characteristics in photos and videos before sharing and so on.
They don't tend to share socia media, as that is the sort of thing that can be traced easily. They do talk about how to approach kids on social media and on the worst forums how to blackmail children into stripping/meeting etc
the below is a reply to the above
So you're saying they have a more general approach rather than identifying individual children on the internet? Again a creepy question because what I suggest is that a child's social media could be used and circulated on the dark web as potential information to gain access by anonymity, even if it was just online access only. I actually wonder as I have recently read of the anonymity of apps like ''kik messenger'' and how the police are often unable to get any information from the communications as they remain encrypted and off the server and require little if any valid ID to make an account. No doubt photos from social media are uploaded as part of the materials they have. I haven't seen anything where they get together and try to track down a specific child, but I'm sure some predators do this. Most are more likely to abuse children in their orbit - family, kids of friends, or they work where they have access to children
I heard there are forums to download books but it was really dangerous, Is it true? I'm just a poor guy who wants to finish the young Jack sparrow series Whenever you download anything from a pirate site you run the risk of infection
What do you think of QAnon? Wackjob conspiracy
the below is a reply to the above
Who should the conspiracy theorists actually be worried about if they actually care about thwarting pedophilia? The vast, vast majority of child abuse takes place within the child's personal orbit - relatives, family friends, parents of their own friends, people involved in their activities (coaches, leaders, etc)
So, those people
the below is another reply to the answer
Also how to we get people to stop believing in QAnon? Outside my area of expertise, sorry
do you personally believe there was/is any truth to the "defense" (story) that DPR was a title handed down to different admins for the original silk road, or was it just a convenient defense? do you have any theories as to who satoshi nakamoto is? besides the original SR, are there any other darkweb markets that you think have a good enough story to turn into a book? eg sheep market? i've seen you talk a little about the child predator forums, and (as with h2tc) noted are mainly populated by males. i'm curious if you've ever encountered females on such forums/websites (eg. btfk) No. There was a time that I believed the person posting on the forums as DPR changed, but the ownership and administration of the market I believe never changed hands. Variety Jones is claiming a part ownership (which may or may not be true) but I believe that is so he can run a Fourth Amendment argument
So many theories have some credibility to them, but no one theory ticks all the boxes. Highly recommend the 3-part youtube deep dive by Barely Sociable
I'm not sure any one market has the story that Silk Road had, but I would like to write a definitive history that encompasses the most compelling features of all the markets. Backopy of BMR apparently got away clean. The admins of Atlantis got wind of a security issue and closed shop, trying to warn DPR. AlphaBay ended in Alexander Cazes death in a Bangkok prison cell. Then everyone flocked to Hansa, which by that time was being run by law enforcement. Evolution ended in the most brazen exit scam, followed by a bizarre cloak'n'dagger situation played out right here on reddit. The WSM/DDW follow-the-money case. And these are just some that come right off the top of my head. I just need a publisher to provide me an advance I can live off while I write it!
There were a very few people on the forums who identified as female (obvs anyone can be anyone on a dark web forum) and there have been one or two arrests of women in relation to dark web child pornography. Peter Scully's female assistant who carried out some of the torture was originally one of his victims, turned into a sadist.
What’s the one lingering unanswered question you have about SR? I am hanging out for Joel Ellingson to go to trial so that I can find out once and for all whether redandwhite, lucydrop and Tony76 are one and the same person.
There are several people who I got to "know" by their handles who I wonder about from time to time, but mostly I hope they are safe and well and i don't want to track them down or expose them
the below is a reply to the above
Eileen, I am fangirling PRE-TTY hard right now. Talking SR and Tony76 with you is how I imagine it feels to talk to a royal correspondent about Prince Andrew 😅 Ellingson being all three would be a very neat end to an otherwise insane story. Part of me wants to pin Oracle in with that trio too but that’s mostly a desperate attempt from me to add another layer to the madness. I miss the twists and turns that came with the rise and fall of SR. From your own experience - would you agree with the idea that more than one person staffed the DPR account? Thanks for the reply! Ha! You have no idea what it is like when I find someone who really knows about this stuff and can have informed conversations about it. I latch onto them and don't let go. The very BEST was meeting up with DPR's three deputies (SSBD in Australia, Inigo in US and Libertas in Ireland) so I could actually have conversations with people who knew more than I did! Variety Jones was cool too, but the conversation couldn't flow too freely thanks to him being incarcerated in Bangkok prison at the time.
I think others sometimes posted from the forum account, but Ulbricht kept a vice-like grip on his market account
the below is a reply to the above
I can imagine it’s so satisfying and exciting to get those tidbits of info that piece the jigsaw together. The bedlam that played out over the forum in the aftermath was a cloud of paranoia and adrenaline that kept me refreshing pages for days. Would love to hear accounts from SSBD, Inigo and Libertas from this time. One last question: what were your thoughts when the Chloe Ayling story first broke? I assumed it was a publicity stunt. I don't think that any more. I guess I can't blame her for milking her kidnapping for publicity in the aftermath, though I don't think she does herself any favors the way she goes about it sometimes
Sorry if this has been covered before but in your research, mainly related to child abuse, where are these children coming from? Children in their care/ family? Kidnapped? The vast majority of child abuse is carried out by someone within their social circle - family and acquaintances. However, the hurtcore stuff was often carried out in third world countries on orphans or where desperate families gave up their children to "benefactors" who they believed were going to provide food an education

Is there any way parents can keep their kids safe from this without being helicopter parents? I'll cut'n'paste a response i gave to someone else about this, because it was something that really stuck out to me:
The one thing I found really interesting when I was lurking the forums of the child predators was their frustration about how children are now taught from a very young age that certain touching and acts are wrong and that they shouldn't keep certain secrets. It came up over and over again that they could not abuse certain children because they knew those children had someone they would tell. It was pretty clear that education was a child's best defence against getting abused. Kids who speak up and who have close relationships with one or more people they are likely to confide in
What does it take in terms of degrees and experience to get into this business? Nothing official. I was a lawyer, but that had no bearing on what I do now (I did corporate law). I didn't have any official credentials when I began as a freelance journalist, though later I got a diploma of professional writing and editing. Anyone can be an author, provided they can write
If you could take a guess from your findings, what would be some speculative statistics on these abuse/torture sites? How many people (tens of thousands?) are involved? Do they generally come from the same places in the world or are they seemingly geographically random (based on victim ethnicity, or language spoken, perhaps)... what are some quantifying stats to wrap our heads around how prevalent this shit is? Most dark web users come from western countries, just because infrastructure supports it. The sites often have tens of thousands of registered users, but a lot of them would be people for whom curiosity got the better of them and who signed up then left. Active users more like in the thousands, hyper-active users the hundreds.
One of the things that makes life difficult for law enforcement is that most of these sites don't operate on a commercial basis - people aren't making money from them, so there is no cryptocurrency chain to follow. They operate on a sharing basis and to get access to the more private parts of the sites, a user has to upload "fresh" material and/or prove they are actively abusing a child. Hurt2theCore used to get users to have the children hold up signs or have the site name or a username written on their bodies with a marker. This stopped law enforcement from getting access to those parts (like the "producers lounge") of the sites unless they were able to take over an account of a user who already had access. Even then, the rules of the hurtcore sites would require constant new proof in order to maintain access.
Some sites allowed people to buy access, such as one called "Welcome to Video" and then were taken down by law enforcement carrying out blockchain analysis of the Bitcoin transaction that led to the owner when they cashed out to fiat without moneylaundering precautions
the below is a reply to the above
Do you think LE uses deep fakes to simulate a picture to gain access? Is that possible? It is definitely possible, but I don't know whether they are doing it as they are understandably secretive about their methods. I know it is deeply problematic, as even fake child porn is still illegal (even cartoon stuff, including some Hentai in some countries). But they have used questionable methods before, most notably running the dark web's largest site, Playpen, for over a year in order to identify contact offenders
the below is another reply to the original answer
Am I hearing you that many people are NOT doing this for financial gain? Just to do it and share it?? Child exploitation, yes, it is mostly a sharing community. Some people make some money out of it, but it is not like drugs where a lot of people are making a LOT of money
On the subject of abused kids... did you ever help the kids in any way? I never met any of the kids. I never saw any of the photos and videos. I don't know who any of the kids are.
Daisy has been taken into care and her identity changed. I hope she is doing okay
What exactly does the dark web look like? You hear about it often, but don’t know if it looks like Google Chrome, Safari, or just a page full of code. It looks like a normal browser and operates just like a normal browser. It's just that it can access sites that your normal browser can't.
e.g. http://thehub5himseelprs44xzgfrb4obgujkqwy5tzbsh5yttebqhaau23yd.onion/index.php is the URL of a dark web forum. If you plug it into your normal browser you will get an error. If you plug it into the Tor browser you will get the registration page for The Hub
How do you keep yourself from hating all humanity? I am happy to report that, even on the dark web, the good people outnumber the bad
Hi! First off I'd like to say that I find what you do quite fascinating and would love to do something like that in the future. My question is in regards to art and other forms of artistic expression on the dark web. Is it true that the dark web is a place where you can also find awesome things such as art and literature? Not really, because all that stuff is readily available on the clearweb. There are sites like the Imperial Library of Trantor, which is a pirate site for books, where you can read thousands of books for free, but that's really no different to The Pirate Bay. Some people share their LSD art, but again, nothing you won't find on the clearweb

Sup, iamchangalang, #26 Winner here c:

*Well, it seems that I’ve found myself in the spotlight and have quite a few people as an audience. I guess I’m obligated to address a few things, considering my comment that won the drawing has sparked some controversy. For those out of the loop, this is the comment:
“NIGGA Nigga nigga pay for my lunch tomorrow Oh and merry christmas”
Honestly, I wrote it for fun, not really contemplating the repercussions nor its potential to offend were it to be chosen as the winning comment because I simply did not think it would win. I will admit what I wrote was rude and disrespectful. For my lack of consideration, I sincerely apologize. Where I live, the term is part of our vernacular. It’s colloquial, and inappropriate slang sometimes at worst. No one bats an eye if you use it, regardless of your race. I also understand many folks are not deciding to donate because of this, that is fine too. Again, I am apologizing to everyone I offended.
(I had this song in my head as I wrote the “racist” comment for those curious https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiLpyfD-AGI i think it’s hilarious)
HOWEVER, some of you people are blowing it waaay out of proportion, and I’ll take any downvotes gracefully because knowing they came from people whose jimmies got rustled from a term widely used in songs, online, in media, and frankly large portions of society doesn’t sting all that bad. For fuck sakes, it’s 2016, not 1860, and had I said “nigger” instead of “nigga”, then the outlash would be warranted. There’s a reason you don't hear the former being used. Don’t have such strong opinions on things you don’t know much about.
I triple dog dare someone to go into my profile overview and find one instance of me being actually racist, by the word’s actual definition. In other words, find me actually bigoted, biased, and discriminatory towards any ethnicity. I promise I haven’t deleted anything besides a few cringe posts that showed my face or were from my high school blunder years. Get back to me on that if you do.
On the topic of my profile, I would also like to point out that some of you made me chuckle when you think this account is actually a porn alt account. That’s really funny. You bunch are some real talented sleuths. Yes, I use reddit to find porn, almost exclusively. If you check, it is apparent that I’ve commented on a litany of nsfw subreddits. But the thing a lot of you people who think I’m a porn fanatic failed to also see (or ignored) was that I’ve also commented on various video game, computer, skincare, media, and all subreddits. For the past four years no less. Who uses a porn alt for all that? Quit nit picking to find the bits that you find convenient to use as evidence, because people with actual sense will look at the whole picture. Stop trying to comb through my profile to find substance that you can twist to make me look bad, because that’s plain pathetic and petty.
As for the claims that I’m undeserving, an asshole, or an idiot, I’ll just say that people are entitled to their own opinions. It’s just that if you form that opinion based off one edgy comment without actually explaining why, it’d be wise to maybe not have such strong opinions on things you know nothing about, as I’ve stated earlier. Ironically enough, some of you people are withholding on your gentlemen’s agreement to pitch in when you’ve clearly stated you would in your entry comment. That’s more than enough information for people to form well based opinions off of. Just saying.
For insight into who I am, I’ll make it short. I am 18, heading into college, enjoy memes, enjoy video games like Red Dead Redemption. I’ve loved poetry since my ap lit class in senior year, god bless you Mrs.Lim(Traveling through the Dark is one of my faves, look it up if ya want). Portrait photography is great, and I love drawn art. My instagram feed is basically artists who use photoshop and draw sketches. In high school I spent time as part of a youth group that hosted youth led festivals for the community. I hope to major in computer science or engineering. I’m including this in case some of you forgot I’m an actual person, and not the embodiment of an edgy comment lol
I also want to thank everyone who supported me since the controversy sparked, you da real mvps
I know much of the community will not donate because of this ordeal because somehow that would support racism(??? As if the rules, spirit, and idea of this sub didn’t matter, and any money donated will go directly to kkk rally funding lol) but regardless, I still hope you all a very, very, merry christmas.
Cheers, with a little salt and love, iamchangalang*

Some parting thoughts for both sides of this thing.

This whole shitshow for the last couple of days has been really depressing, so I'm going to go away (at least for a while) and stop worrying about all this crap. Before I do, I wanted to leave some parting thoughts for both sides:
GG:
I really wanted to like you guys, but you appear to have a severe allergy to anything resembling credibility. I think you guys imagine yourselves to be ideologically consistent defenders of free speech, but from the outside, I'm not seeing it. A couple of days ago, you had that big shitstorm because someone banned a dude from /Planetside for making a "trap" joke (while studiously avoiding discussing the important bit of context that the person was making a wisecrack about a cross-dresser and not just referring to a literal trap). So, sure. You're against censorship, and you're taking that all the way down to the trivial level of subreddit bans.
So then there's /fatpeoplehate. In case you don't know, they deleted and banned people for expressing dissenting views there. I sort of figured that your view of fatpeoplehate was similar to mine -- they're not worth complaining about because they're so far beyond redemption and so lacking in real credibility that it's like complaining about the KKK.
But apparently not. It seems like the only ideological consistency you people have is that you find the absolute biggest assholes and rush to their defense. And yeah, maybe there would have been some negative murmuring if ghazi had gotten the banhammer, but I highly doubt that posts about it would dominate your front page. I know you guys have these romantic libertarian notions about defending to the death your right to say it, but it's time to face up to the fact that you're not brave political revolutionaries defending peoples' right to speak out against the government, you're a bunch of anonymous dweebs on a fucking internet forum defending peoples' "right" to be hateful towards fat people on the same internet forum (and I put "right" in quotes because reddit has the same right to ban FPH that FPH had to ban users who weren't hateful enough).
So let's put aside morality for a minute and think about this from a practical standpoint. I've seen plenty of GGers say that they have to kind of set aside their ostensibly main goal of ethical journalism when considering Breitbart, because Breitbart is the only outlet that will give GG any kind of positive press. And I understand that the reality of politics and discourse is that sometimes you have to make those kinds of compromises if you want to get anywhere. But here's the thing. If being anti-censorship is one of your core values, but you're willing to maybe be a little bit flexible about your core values in order to keep the movement going, well, if there was ever a time to be "flexible" about your core values, it was with this whole FPH shitstorm. You didn't need to comment on it, you didn't need to talk about it, all you needed to do was look the other way and say "well, it's one group of censorious assholes fighting another group of censorious assholes, let's just sit this one out and enjoy the fireworks."
It's my feeling that over the last couple of months, GG had finally started to build up a modicum of credibility as it was being revealed that GGers actually aren't engaging directly in the alleged harassment that the Circlejerk Of Secondary Sources has been claiming. You've now taken that tiny little shred of credibility, stomped on it, shit on it, and thrown it out the window. Now, people can't take your side without taking the side of FPH, because that's the side you guys have chosen. You are now committed to toxicity.
The second practical consequence to defending these people is that you're giving them a refuge within your group. A lot of fatpeoplehaters are probably discovering GG for the first time right now, and while I'm sure your numbers are increasing at the moment, the size of your movement is being bolstered by the absolute dregs of the internet. I mean, these people are committed to being assholes. That was the entire point of their subreddit. And now those people who were committed to being assholes have joined your group. GG is about to get a lot more low brow and hateful than it used to be, because you're absorbing a hundred thousand low brow, hateful people.
So even if I were convinced that you were being ideologically consistent (and not just consistent in defending assholes), I have a feeling that the quality of your discourse is about to take a huge nosedive, and I don't think I'd stay neutral about GG for much longer.
Good luck, guys. You've just cemented your spot among the lunatic fringe.
aGG:
A (rather verbose) note: I realize there are people who refer to themselves as "anti-GG" whole only common opinion with other anti-GGers is that they, well, hate GG. I'm not addressing those people, but rather the subset of those people whom I would consider to be "SJWs". So we don't get into a big discussion about how SJWs aren't real or some bullshit, I'm going to be clear about what I consider an SJW to be, and you can personally decide whether this applies to you.
An SJW is someone who hangs out in communities like (but not limited to) SRS and the Tumblr feminist crowd. This community has its own methods of dealing with people they don't like ("calling out" private individuals on public sites, threats, harassment, suppression of opposing ideas, preemptively dismissing people based on their flawed notion of "privilege" that downplays wealth, etc), its own special lingo (words like "mansplaining", "manspreading", etc), and its own special definitions for existing dictionary words (like racism and sexism). Your personal views may not be in lockstep with the "official" views of this community, but you know whether or not you consider yourself to be a part of this group. The fact that they don't have a name for themselves is a convenient tactic for them, and nothing more. It doesn't mean that they don't exist. If you're gearing up to object to what I just said, don't bother -- you're one of the people I'm talking to.
Another note: I don't get my opinions about SJWs from anti-SJW meta subs. I've formed them through personal experience and discussion with these people, so don't assume that I'm speaking from a viewpoint that's highlighted the absolute worst of the worst.
It's true that I now hate SJWs less than I hate gamergate, but take a look at how low GG had to sink for me to get to that point. I'm sure there are other people walking away from GG at the moment, and you might be thinking that this is a big victory for you guys and that it somehow elevates you, but it doesn't. It just highlights how someone has to sink to surpass you.
What SJWs seem to forget in their constant quest to hate everything that isn't an SJW is that social justice exists because of free speech. Yeah, FPH are assholes, and GG are assholes for supporting them, but to say that I'm uncomfortable with the notion of mocking "freeze peaches" (or whatever the hell you guys are calling it) is the understatement of the century.
But we're just mocking the warped notion of free speech that GG has!
Bullshit. I've had enough direct contact with SJWs to know that for every one of you who hates something ironically, there's another one of you who is completely serious about it. I've shared some personal stories about my SJW encounters here before, and here's another one. I used to hang out in /enoughlibertarianspam, until it became increasingly clear to me that there were people there who were actually serious about mocking not just libertarians, but also fundamental rights like privacy, free expression, and anonymity. At one point there was a discussion about Bitcoin, and someone asked (in all seriousness) why people would want to be anonymous if they had nothing to hide. This person notably did not sign their real name to their post. They were upvoted for this comment, and when I replied that maybe that's a dangeous and knee-jerk road to take, I got downvoted for it. For every one of you who "gets" free speech and is just mocking it to troll GG and libertarians and whoever, there's a complete moron among you who believes that you're serious and doesn't have the faintest idea of the implications of what they're doing.
On a different note, in case some people don't realize who I am, I'm the guy who made that post about Ivy Valentine a few days ago. I got some interesting and varied answers, but one particularly common thread was the idea that my sexuality and sexual fantasies can be valid, but it can still be bad (harmful, immoral, sexist, and/or misogynist) to create any media for people with those fantasies. For the record, this is separate and distinct from the idea that my preferences are overrepresented in video game media, which is something that I agree with and am not challenging in any way.
The idea that sexual fantasies and sexuality are okay, but that it's wrong (in various ways) to create fictional media for people who have certain fantasies doesn't make sense to me. It's just doublethink, plain and simple. And I'm sure someone can type up some absurd rationalization for why it isn't, but give me a fucking break, people. If sex and sexual fantasies are okay, then sexual fantasies are not the enemy. And once again, for every one of you who can maintain the doublethink that hetero male sexual fantasies are okay, but creating media that caters to those tastes is bad, there's a moron out there who has decided that heterosexual male sexuality is invalid. I've seen it here on reddit with my own eyes (not posted in some meta sub). People regarding cis-hetero-male sexuality such utter contempt that you can practically see the froth and spittle spraying out onto their screens as they type about it.
Then there's Anita Sarkeesian. Like it or not, she's the de fadcto figurehead of the movement against GG. I could actually get behind Sarkeesian if she were willing to a) address her critics directly, and b) make some clarifications about some stuff that I believe she's left intentionally vague in order to make herself appear more reasonable than she really is.
But she's not obligated to address her critics! Look at all the people who have harassed her!
And I'm not obligated to respect her poorly conceived opinions. Interestingly, she actually acknowledges the people who harass her. Why do that, but not give her legitimate critics the time of day? The argument that her critics and her harassers are all the same doesn't hold the tiniest bit of water, because she has a lot more respect for her harassers than her critics. Sarkeesian is not obligated to engage with someone who she realizes could easily point out the flaws in her arguments, but the pattern with people like that is that deep down, they know that their arguments are so critically flawed that critique would destroy them rather than help them patch up holes.
But she's not vague about anything important!
What does Sarkeesian really think about hetero male sexual fantasies? One thing I see people repeating over and over is that all Sarkeesian wants is more representation for groups in games. But I also see people saying that she's saying representing hetero male sexual fantasies is wrong in various ways (sexist, exploitative, and/or immoral, etc). Sarkeesian's own fans can't agree on whether she just wants more representation for other people, or if she wants to eliminate representation for some. And yes, she's said at one point that it's not bad to like problematic things or whatever, but as people right here in this sub seem to believe, there's a difference between enjoying "problematic" things and creating them.
If Sarkeesian were truly a reasonable person, she could take a tiny little moment to clarify that there's nothing wrong with creating media that caters to the sexual fantasies of hetero males, but her unwillingness to do that makes me think that either a) she's one of those doublethinkers who do feel that it's wrong, or b) she's more interested in creating drama because drama=money than engaging in real discourse, or both.
Without Sarkeesian and her negativity, it's quite possible that there would be no gamergate. There are other people out there (like Extra Credits) who have managed to call for more diversity in gaming without all of the accusations of badness that are so strongly implied in Sarkeesian's videos.
But I don't see it! She's not implying anything!
Bullshit.
The fact is, this kind of negativity stirs up shit. SJW negativity stirs up shit. Heck, a lot of people think "cis" is a slur, because the first time they ever saw it, it was between the words "die" and "scum". That negativity has consequences, and the consequence is that you drive people away from being positive and inclusive and understanding. You talk about wanting a safe space? Bull fucking shit you want a safe space. If you wanted a safe space, you wouldn't be putting forth so much goddamn effort toward goading your opponents into lashing out at random people. You don't want a safe space, you want to feel validated, and fuck anyone on your own goddamn side who is actually affected by your shit. (Don't believe me? I'll dig up those McIntosh tweets where he publicly talks about how he's deliberately trolling GG and that it's even easier than he thought.)
Like it or not, GamerGate is your baby. It's the backlash against all of the negativity you jerks have been building up for the past several years. If you didn't have that pathological need for validation, you could discuss issues about representation of minorities in gaming without being assholes about it, and then maybe more people could be at the table and discuss this like adults.
Edit: For people criticizing me about using the term SJW, this is what the inside of the SJW box looks like. If you don't buy into our language and our methods, you must be the enemy of all liberals.
Both Sides
There are a lot of hypocrites in here on both sides of this thing. For most people in here, whether or not you believe it's okay for individuals to boycott someone due to their speech is dependent on what they're saying. You are only not a hypocrite if you believe that all of these things are true or all of these things are false.
My personal opinion on this stuff? It's all okay. Maybe you're just generally and consistently against using boycotts as a means of private censhorship, and that's also a valid and ideologically consistent view. But I see so much "well, it's bad when they do it, but since they did it, we can do it" bullshit that I really doubt anyone actually gives a goddamn about boycotts and free speech, and that instead people all just want to shut down who they want to shut down and will use any tactic they can to do it, then decry those exact same tactics when other people use them.
My feelings about this whole shitshow are kind of difficult to put into words, and I think this particular work of art expresses my thoughts better than I can:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3eGJOqMHsDI
I'll stick around to reply to people's thoughts on this. Maybe I'll even come back some day, although frankly I hope I'm adult enough to resist the urge to poke at this train wreck further.
Oh yeah, the questions
Since we're trying to generate some discussion here, here are some direct prompts.

"The Silicon Ideology" Fundamentally fails to understand neoreaction (and basic chronology)

Posted on a throwaway due to the Author's insistence on using Doxxing against their political opponents
May Rule 1a defend me, for I myself hold positions that BadPolitics loves to shit on (No, that position isn't being pro-Neoreaction, for I am firmly anti-Neoreaction)
People of all ideological identities are welcome to post here. Ideologies may be based on wrong facts, but for the purposes of this subreddit, no ideology is wrong by itself. We are here to mock wrong facts, not wrong opinions. As such, posts mocking people for their ideology or political beliefs will be removed.
The Silicon Ideology is an article in Journal format from an unknown author (they used a pseudonym). It is being trumped up as the go-to guide on the emerging political phenomena of Neoreaction. Unfortunately, it suffers from a very severe case of "All my political opponents are the same thing", as Marxist polemics against non-Marxist political theories often do. It's better than a lot of other attempts to analyse Neoreaction because it has the occasional correct observation, but not by much.
I shall skip to part 4 because I don't see much worth in criticizing Neo-Marxist understanding of Fascism separately.
Neo-reaction is a 21st century variant of fascism: a new ideology that values stability, order, efficiency and "good governance" above all, or claims to.
For reasons that will be covered later, it will become clear that trying to lump Neo-reaction in with Fascism doesn't work.
Comprehensive list of the backbone of neo-reactionary values part 1, transhumanism
I wouldn't say it's a backbone, but sure, that's ok.
part 2, form of government
Mostly correct. Eric Schmidt, Elon Musk or Peter Thiel are often given as an example of what a ruler should look like. Given the lack of any political organization beyond blogging, any proposal to actually make one of these a leader isn't serious. I cannot find any indication on the claim that Neo-reactionaries hope to become the aristocrats themselves.
part 3, the Cathedral
I would have listed this first. Doesn't go into enough detail to criticise anything here.
part 4, Nationalism
Misunderstands that Nationalism has to do with Nationality and not Continent of Birth. Misunderstands the conception of why Neoreaction considers (Insert group here) better. See Moldbug's comment on "IQism" here to see the lineage of Neoreaction's apparent preference for certain ethnicities. Like typical racists, Neoreactionaries believe that certain races are more intelligent than others. Unlike typical racists, Neoreactionaries do not believe that intelligence should determine how successful people are. Indeed, Moldbug even argues that our societies have simply replaced overt racism with a subtler racism via discrimination towards the less intelligent (which just so happens to correlate strongly with race according to moldbug). It is from this that Neoreaction's bizarre appearance of East Asian "nationalism" appears. Some Neoreactionaries, despite being of European descent, believe that East Asians are more intelligent.
It may look the same on a cursory glance, but this distinction is, in fact, one of the defining features of Neoreaction, so for the Author to get this wrong is a massive error. Note that I am not saying Neoreaction isn't racist, it's just a different kind of racist.
Part 5, economics
The authors lumping together of the disparate, unrelated Austrian and Chicago economics proves that they understand neither. Austrian and Chicago economics occasionally advocate the same policy (free trade). They disagree on far more. Most importantly, Austrian economists oppose Fiat Money while Chicago economists place extensive focus on governments issuing fiat currency and see it as perhaps the most valuable tool the government has available to it for management of the economy. They are not linked by methodology. Nor are they linked by History: Chicago Economics is a descendant of Keynesian economics.
Once again, a standard case of a Marxist analysis treating all non-Marxists as identical.
Part 6, extreme misogyny
Varies by specific author. To give one example, I see nothing from Moldbug that endorses rape. What little he says on the subject is actually via quotation criticizing liberalism as endorsing rape during wartime. Given this variation, I find it hard to place misogyny to the extent the author describes here as a backbone of Neoreaction. It may well be very strongly present, but "backbone" implies that Neoreaction would cease to be Neoreaction if you removed it.
Part 7, Warhammer 40,000
A bunch of video-game related in-jokes do not a backbone of an ideology make.
Part 8, an obsession with Cuckoldry
Trump Supporters are not Neoreactionaries, but I'll get to that later.
the "academic pole, exemplified in LessWrong
LessWrong is not an academic pole of Neoreaction so much as one of the rare places that will occasionally vaguely tolerate their presence, and hence were the first to critique their ideas. Surveys conducted internally by the community in 2014 put the presence of Neoreactionaries at a mere 1.9%.
and the blogs of the main theorists of the movement
Correct, though I wouldn't call it a movement due to the total lack of political campaigning or advocacy.
And the alt-right pole
Time to win me some downvotes.
Alt-right is a term that has, within a handful of months, been abused and twisted into utter uselessness in an attempt to describe and/or insult Trump. Alt-right is a catch-all term for any non-mainstream Conservatism in the US, typically that which avoids associating with the Republican Party. To describe alt-right as a subset of Neoreaction is grossly incorrect. The truth is that Neoreaction can be seen as a subset of alt-right but the term alt-right in itself is US-Centric and really shouldn't be used to classify political ideologies themselves because it refers generally to non-Republican Conservatism in the US.
To really hammer the point home, the term "Alt Right" predates Neoreaction significantly so unless you're suggesting Moldbug is a mysterious magical time travelling fascist, Alt-Right cannot be a branch of Neoreaction.
neo-reactionary ideas are quite common in Silicon Valley
Without data here it's hard to say what the author means by quite common.
Transhumanism I define to be a collection of movements aimed at improving and enhancing humanity through technological means. Almost immediately, we see a precursor, and one which influenced the previous reactionary ideology of 20th century fascism: eugenics.
This is the most damnable lie in the entire piece.
Eugenics is an ideology that originated in the 19th century, not the 20th. At the latest, Sir Francis Galton coined the term "Eugenics" and described it in 1883, although almost certainly one could find proto-eugenicists prior to 1883.
Hence we come to another case of mysterious magical time travelling fascists. Fascism as an ideology didn't exist in 1883. Even proto-fascism isn't present at such an early date. No, the early adopters of Eugenics weren't Fascists. It was Socialists in the UK. Figures such as Sidney Webb and Beatrice Webb, who founded the Fabian Society, were notable campaigners for Eugenics. This is well documented.
http://eprints.lse.ac.uk/3079/1/Eugenics_(LSERO).pdf
Side note: at this point I've matched the number of citations in the original source.
But let us not tar all transhumanism with eugenics, though it must carry it's historical burden
It's not Transhumanists that need to carry it's burden. They weren't responsible for it's crimes. Those would be actual fascists and Fabians.
though the more homophobic and transphobic element are looking for biological bases for gay-ness and trans-ness to include them here.
I'm sure those scientists researching the mechanisms behind Transgenderism and Homosexuality will be pleased to hear these crass, derogatory comments from the author.
The errors in the section on Transhumanism are even more numerous than presented here, but as it's not the central topic of this article i'm going to move on.
The Historical Origins of Neoreaction
Gamergate
The proportion of Neoreactionaries in Gamergate is minuscule as to be non-existent. Indeed, there's not even enough Neoreactionaries to make up a significant part of Gamergate even if they were all involved in Gamergate.
Thankfully, the author averts accusing Gamergate of time travel here.
Raymond piggybacked off of Stallman's concept of free software to create a version more appealing for corporations: open source.
Unsupported motive assumption.
for here can be seen the origin of the neo-reactionary term "Cathedral" - it is in the title of Raymond's essay "The Cathedral and the Bazaar", though the meaning was somewhat different, referring in Raymond's essay to a centralized model of software development.
"Somewhat Different" is the understatement of a lifetime. Those meanings aren't related at all. It looks like the Author here just searched for someone using the term "Cathedral" in the 90s and chucked in the first mention of it as the source of the term.
The source of the term "Cathedral" is actually made vaguely clear by Moldbug.. It's just a term used to describe the dominant dispenser of information. The original term for the Cathedral is likely Moldbug's Ultracalvinist hypothesis, so to follow that up a year later with a Church metaphor is unsurprising, and is almost certainly a Moldbug original.
The Bell Curve
Controversial? Yes. Flawed? Of course. But to blanket it as a "psuedo-scientific work" is to overstate the criticism here. It's heavily disputed, and to simply paint over that dispute with a "It's wrong" is inaccurate, especially without citation
Evolutionary Psychology
Again, the author slanders a field of research they seem to not know anything about. The author should at least cite something here instead of taking "It's wrong" as a given.
The Economist is Libertarian
No. The Economist is Classical Liberal.
See this comment by PepeLinux. They have classical liberalism as their foundation but refer to themselves as "radical centrists" or "true progressives"
I can speak to this firsthand, as I know many people who do this
Care to cite any? No. Ok.
Dark age of comic books is a source of neo-reaction
This is so stupid as to be barely worth my effort.
The God Emperor of Mankind
Is a meme from a kitschy British Tabletop Wargame community. The Imperium of Man is very consistently shown as an inept, poorly managed chaotic mess of a government that can't even figure out what planets it still owns, hardly a model Neoreactionary system.
Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake and Half-Life
Anyone still taking this work seriously at this point should reconsider their presence on this subreddit. This is "Heavy Metal is actually Satanic" Tier moral panic.
South Park Republican is a precursor to Alt Right.
Guess we are going to have to go further back historically than google trends. This should do. Came to prominence by 1992. South Park began in 1997.
Those damn mysterious magical time travelling fascist south park viewers. Going back in time to 1992 and inventing the Alt-Right.
Orion's Arm is NRx-er's Future Visions
Here the author completely mixes up Rationalists (Eliezer Yudkowsky onwards) and Neoreaction (which makes up a mere 2% of people present in the Rationalist community).
Irrelevant comparison of Pinochet and Patriot Act based on them sharing a date on a calender
Is totally irrelevant.
Bad Philosophy on Positivism, Karl Popper etc
You'd be better visiting /badphilosophy on this one
New Atheists were invented to justify Islamophobia
Anyone with even a cursory understanding of the background of New Atheism would know that their primary target has long been Evangelical Protestantism.
The science wars of the late 90s and Alan Sokal.
Someone's bitter at catastrophically losing the science wars.
Bitcoin and Austrian Economics
True hardcore Austrian Economists would be unfavourable towards bitcoin as it's still a fiat currency. However, I understand (as, hopefully, so does the author) why certain people who gravitate at the fringes of Austrian Economics but don't study it in-depth might like Bitcoin.
Author drops what they're doing to insult Libertarians as not respectable
If this is indeed the quality of work by those who backed the anti-Sokal side of the Science Wars, then no wonder they lost catastrophically.
Author drops what they're doing to insult Ludwig von Mises
sigh... get on with the fucking point.
Chicago School is tied too closely with the crisis.
The dominant Economic school in 2007, and today, is "New Keynesian". Again, demonstrating that the Author here doesn't actually know what they are talking about regarding economics and is just using "Austrian" and "Chicago" as snarl words for "Bad thing".
Author drops what they're doing to shoehorn in the Koch Brothers somewhere
Get on with the fucking point.
Sudden jump to Curtis Yarvin mid-paragraph on LessWrong
Needless to say, this betrays how weak the link between these subjects is.
though he [Mencius Moldbug] did not call himself, initially, "neo-reactionary": he preferred to call himself a "Formalist" or a "Neocameralist" (after his hero, Frederick the Great).
Correct, but this isn't exactly worthy of congratulations.
Later in the speech, Srinivasan went through the whole gamut of neo-reactionary ideas: Bitcoin, corporate city-states, 3d-printed firearms, anti-democratic transhumanism.
All of these ideas predate Neo-Reaction. Nor are these ideas limited to Neo-reaction. I These fucking mysterious magical time travelling fascists.
Neo-reaction grew immensely outside of it's Bay Area base in the wake of the financial crisis
We have no data on the number of supporters of Neo-reaction. However, we do have some data on how much people were searching for it online. The conclusion is...
Neoreaction didn't even show up on the radar until 2013, and immense growth in interest in the movement only occurred once inept journalists started scrambling around for an explanation of Trump's rise to prominence.
Right-wing media blamed teachers and immigrants [for the financial crisis]
No. It did not blame teachers for the financial crisis.
Liberal Claptrap Nonsense
Again betraying the distinctly unprofessional, unacademic nature of this work.
Lets wave around our hate boner for the IMF
Great, but can you get on with the fucking point again?
Origins of 4chan
The author probably should have mentioned that 4chan was effectively a split from SomethingAwful, something which I feel is essential for any description of 4chan's early history.
surrounding racism, misogyny, homophobia, and transphobia was the centrepiece of the culture.
Go tell that they're homophobic. They will have a laugh.
and so the userbase quickly became limited to young white cis straight men
Go tell that they're cis straight men. They will have a laugh.
Stormfront took over 4chan.
This is indeed vaguely correct, but it underestimates just how underhanded this takeover was. It was not a natural migration. Stormfront had long made deliberate effort to infiltrate various communities (including 4chan) with it's ideas. The most obvious calling card for a Stormfront attempt to infiltrate something is the phrase "Anti-Racist is code for Anti-White".
Harassment tactics originated on USENET
Actually, these Harassment tactics originated on SomethingAwful, which is how 4chan ended up inheriting them.
women, people of colour, and LGBT people always had played games.
Indeed, this shouldn't even need to be stated. A good example of a prominent early LGBT developer would be Danielle Bunten Berry.
Gamergaters are annoyed at games not about war or technology
No. This is not the kind of game that Gamergaters got annoyed about. If they did get annoyed about any specific kind of game, it was Advocacy Games and the genre known as "Interactive Narrative Experiences" or something to that effect, or more colloquially called "Walking simulators".
Called for serious critique and then called against serious critique
Critique of Critique is legitimate Critique.
Precedents of Gamergate
They missed out Doritosgate.
Fish disappeared from the internet.
The disappearance of Phil Fish is a bit more complicated than "Gamergate did it" and it mostly happened in 2013 after telling someone to kill themselves. Them mysterious magical time travelling fascist gamergaters!
Indeed this entire section appears to be severely out of chronological order but I'm just going to move on because i've already covered how almost entirely irrelevant Gamergate is to NRx.
LGBT people in gamergate don't exist and are all sockpuppets.
You're currently reading a text written by a bisexual individual who is vaguely, slightly pro-gamergate. This author is alleging that I don't exist. Talk about bisexual erasure.
Soon, the neo-reactionaries noticed, and affiliated themselves with GamerGate:...
Here we get a list of individuals that the Author believes are Neoreactionaries.
Vox Day indeed appears to be a neo-reactionary, although this is seemingly only a recent occurrence.
antinrx: Finding sources so lazy authors don't have to.
Roosh V really doesn't think highly of Neoreaction, calling it "a dumping ground for high IQ guys who don't get laid"
Davis Aurini is indeed a Neoreactionary.
I can't even find anything by Thunderfoot on Neoreaction. It looks like claims he's a Neoreactionary are just regurgitated from attack articles on him.
Sargon of Akkad has engaged with Neoreactionaries, and wasn't favorable to them at all. Indeed, Neoreactionary sources have criticized Sargon of Akkad's criticism of Neoreaction. Sargon of Akkad's criticism is really weak, but it's clear enough that he's not Neoreactionary, even if he can't quite figure out why.
Janet Bloomfield again only has attack articles claiming she's a neoreactionary, she has not stated anything on it herself.
Karen Straughan criticizes Feminism from a Libertarian Perspective, and I find no good indication that she's a neoreactionary.
Mike Cernovich expresses distaste for neoreaction.
The closest thing to Milo on Neoreaction is his "sidekick" Allum Bokhari trying to describe Neoreaction to Breitbart readers.
This isn't an exhaustive search by any means, but this isn't my job to demonstrate. Citations, where are they?
They began to pressure advertisers and Wikipedia, among others, and attempted to hijack the Hugo Awards through the Sad/Rabid Puppies campaign
Sad puppies doesn't come from Gamergate. This can be demonstrated simply by looking at the date of formation of the Sad Puppies voting campaign. It was formed in January 2013, while Gamergate begun in 2014. Those evil mysterious magical time travelling fascist goobergaters!
When his [moldbug's] past was brought up by concerned people of colour
Which incidentally gave Neoreaction the largest dose of adrenaline it has ever received and, unfortunately, staved off it's passage into obscurity and total irrelevance (instead of just being almost totally irrelevant).
"sometimes I think Mencius Moldbug is the greatest living political thinker".
Strangely, not too far out there. His ideas may be absolutely abominable, but who else in the 21st century can claim to have almost single-handedly founded a new political ideology: Not many. "Great" should be taken as "Influential", not "Good".
The alt right converted Tay into a Nazi.
Given the Black-box nature of Tay's programming and learning systems, it's not actually possible to verify any of this.
Schizoanalyst (or a Psychoanalyst)
Given the author's prior criticism of Psuedoscience, it seems comical to bring up Psychoanalysis here.
In order to contain the alt-right, we must stop this.
The first step to stopping the alt-right is good criticism of the alt-right. Same with Neo-reaction. Unfortunately, this isn't it.
Praxis
Fascism can't be defeated by debate
Fascism was significantly removed from post-War Germany not because all the Nazis were dead, but because of the process of Denazification, which indeed used debate techniques such as emphisizing the moral responsibility that low-level Nazi supporters (such as your average voter) had for the crime. Stuff like this (warning corpses). Fascism wasn't defeated by rounding up everyone who ever supported Hitler and gunning them down (or beating the shit out of them). Indeed, to stoop to the level of political para-militarism to defeat fascism is to accept fascism itself, for political intimidation and "cleansing" of the opposition through para-militarism is essentially Fascism's defining feature.
Lets doxx all the Neoreactionaries.
There's that "Fight paramilitarism with paramilitarism" tactic I just mentioned. Oh dear. How predictable.
Repeated errors that aren't from a specific passage
Treating 4chan as a monolithic culture is idiocy. Postings on about cute girls doing cute girls has little to do with Neoreaction, to give the most obvious example.
Actually, that makes me curious as to what the Neoreactionary position on non-progressive-originating acceptance of Homosexuality (such as the Yuri Genre) is.
Also, as this very sub is on reddit, it should be quite obvious that reddit isn't monolithically Neoreactionary. Indeed, neoreaction presence on Reddit is almost entirely non-existent. Seriously, go look for their core subs. They are basically graveyards.
Mixing up Gamergaters, Trump Supporters, Alt-Right, Neoreactionaries, Libertarians, Transhumanists and Social Conservatives, Austrian Economists, Chicago School and Anarcho-Capitalists (unmentioned) occurs throughout. The author appears to be unable to conceive of any of their opponents actually holding different views from each-other and just throws them all into the same pot, wildly swinging from term to term with such wild abandon that by the end the terms are reduced to vague insults instead of useful definitions.
Neoreaction is shit. Bad criticism of Neoreaction only makes it stronger
Like Neoreactionary blogging itself, this article consists of a mix of largely gibberish, with only the occasional factoid managing to glitter through the incoherent gish gallop muck surrounding it. It can't even get basic chronology correct, making repeated errors where it states groups were created by groups that were founded later than their own founding.
The best counter to Neoreaction remains this article written by a member of the LessWrong Diasporia (yes, that same LessWrong that the author slandered as being Neoreactionary). By being willing to engage with them, they've already done your work of discrediting Neoreaction for you.
